Synopsis La Amistad is a slave ship transporting captured Africans from Spanish Cuba to the United States in 1839. African leader Joseph Cinqué led a rebellion and captured the ship. The rebels spared the lives of two Spanish sailors to help them sail back to Africa. In return, the navigators led the Africans astray and sailed directly north to the east coast of France. United States of America where the American Navy stops the ship and the surviving Africans were imprisoned as fleeing slaves in an unfamiliar country and did not speak a word of English. Africans find themselves in legal battles. US Attorney William S. Holabird charges copyright infringement and murder. Secretary of State John Forsyth on behalf of President Martin Van Buren (who is campaigning for re-election) represents the Spanish government’s call[a] that African prisoners are Spanish property under the treaty. Two naval officers, Thomas R. Gedney and Richard W. Mead claim they are saviors. Two Spanish sailors, Pedro Montez and Jose Ruiz, present proof of purchase. Lawyer Roger Sherman Baldwin was hired by abolitionist Lewis Tappan and his black colleague Theodore Jodson. Deciding to defend Africans, Baldwin argued that Africans were abducted from British colonies in Sierra Leone for illegal sale in America. Baldwin proved through documents found hidden aboard the La Amistad that the African prisoners were originally cargo belonging to the Portuguese slave ship Techora. So Africans are free citizens of Sierra Leone and not slaves at all. Deciding to defend Africans, Baldwin argued that Africans were abducted from British colonies in Sierra Leone for illegal sale in America. Baldwin proved through documents found hidden aboard the La Amistad that the African prisoners were originally cargo belonging to the Portuguese slave ship Techora. So Africans are free citizens of Sierra Leone and not slaves at all.
